tuesday post for peace
July 17, 2007 by Betmo
democratically elected prime minister al-maliki told reporters recently that america can leave iraq anytime now. poll after poll of the iraqi people tells the same story- they want us to leave their country. americans want america to leave iraq. greed is not a good reason to stay at war, but i have a feeling that’s why we are still there years after being lied to by bushco. why else would we continue to stoke fires of animosity and hatred by being an occupying force? make no mistake, we are there as an occupying force. why else would we spend billions of dollars on constructing military bases and a fortress embassy compound in iraq? these buildings are built to last.
make no mistake, the current american regime- bushco and the corporate elite- are not interested in peace in iraq. they are not interested in anything other than profits now and profits in the future. there’s a reason that halliburton moved to dubai. we, the people, cannot trust our government to do the right thing. we cannot trust them to make decisions that are in our best interest as a nation or as a part of the greater world. they are clearly out for themselves.
now is the time to fight harder to take back our country. we have unleashed a civil war in iraq, and there is no way to ever make amends- although we should spend our lives making the attempt. we have to be the peace that we seek and we have to fight for peace- as oxymoronic as that sounds. if we don’t, thousands more iraqi civilians will die and/or be displaced. thousands of kurds will be killed or displaced by possible impending war with turkey. we have to care- because it is obvious that our fellow americans- the people in government- do not. peace in our time is possible- if we work together.

I agree that we must ‘fight for peace’ Betmo but, I don’t think we will actually have as much control over what happens in Iraq as most people think.
The Iraqi people have their own history and its a violent one. We cannot affect the final outcome there, that is something Iraq will put into motion eventually, inspite of Bush’s efforts or those of us that wish to see peace in the region.
The hatred between the Kurds, Sunni’s and Shia’s goes back hundreds of years. I still think the country will be split into three states that will never recognize the others sovereignty.
But that doesn’t mean we should stop working towards Peace.
greed is not a good reason to stay at war.
Ya think? Betmo, it is the ONLY reason that Cheney and his puppet went to war. The reasons for Halliburton Co.’s move to Dubai have been obvious since the March 12 announcement, and I suspect that Dick Cheney has a cottage on the top floor of one of the new island hotels there, too.
Rather than fight for peace, which is an oxymoron in my opinion, we need to BE the peace we want to see.
PS, I love the images, and I want to borrow that flag for my blog.
thank dusty for the flag- and feel free to take it
i think that i am of the mind that we should be fighting in this country for peace. dusty and diva have made the points before that we cannot effect the outcome of anything in iraq- and i quite agree with that. we have a war on here in america- a civil war between ideologies. like it or not we are in a fight for the survival of our country- and while there hasn’t been a physical battle- the damage is just as great. we do have to be the peace we seek- but it doesn’t have to be passive. there are plenty of ways to be active and positive for peace. we have to do it.
I think we’ve seen examples aplenty of large groups of people doing what they consider fighting for peace…peacefully that is. To do otherwise would land us in the slammer. It’s just that not enough of the US is doing it yet…it’s needed on a much larger scale. But the administration has taken care of that with the Feds…and it’s a more police state like atmosphere to be involved in something like that now…they intend to hurt those that march and demonstrators because they do not want this to gain momentum. They want us to fear them so we won’t go out and be visible or have a voice. Think Cheney’s grimace and you’ll know perfectly what I mean.
Our country is on the brink. If Congress does not Impeach Cheney and Bush, then whomever is elected President will go into office with unchecked and nearly absolute powers. I agree we need to act at home. However, I strongly believe that how we act is essential. We need to be the example of what a peaceful nation should be.
Again, Cindy Sheehan is an example of what peaceful action looks like. She had questions for Bush - still unanswered - as to why Casey Sheehan died. She set up camp in Crawford Texas. She has a right to know. She’s not acted violently, she’s been reasonable, beyond resonable - and she gets vilified for it.
I dunno, the world is insane.
i agree sumo and diva. the world is insane and we need to proceed with caution. i can’t predict what is going to happen- i just hope that more people will be involved this election cycle. i have no faith in congress.
Since the Senate just voted to give Bush free reign with Iran, and Blair supposedly a Mideast “peace” envoy, look for Bush through Blair to incite Israel to attack Iran, prompting Bush to intervene militarily to “defend” Israel.
Thus the beginning of World War III.
I hope I’m wrong.

I hope you’re wrong too but it isn’t looking so good.
