Enigma’s Voting Story

I was not going to write about this, I have actually been trying to write this story for my book, Silent Fallout, but every time it leaves me angst filled and furious. But three times this week I have been reading blogs about WHY VOTE, and the horror of what I went through keeps swirling through my head. Some of you know bits of it as I blogged with great anxiety in 2006 and Voting, but I never really explained WHY. Now I will. It is time. It is time that you hear What happened to just a normal American mom.
Many of you know my tale, that I ran a small non-profit that fought a big Evil Chemical Company in the Northwest to attempt to protect the good folks in a little NW town. And to a large degree we suceeded in our quest for the little town. And it led to Federal Investigations and Criminal Investigations. And it led to a quiet nurse and mom having quite a story and a book that is due out later this year ( Silent Fallout).
As a nurse and a mom who was battling a HUGE Rich Company that were friends with the Bush Family it was a difficult battle. And there was alot of harrassment, threats and worse for our little family and the nonprofit to endure. And after many Federal Meetings etc, I was advised to leave my wonderful home in the NW that I had lived in for almost 17 years. It was the State that I had seen whales, met Indians, hiked, and had our son. I was advised by Certain Entities in DC to move to another state to better protect my son, and to give us some level of safety.
So on MLK ’s Birthday in 2004 after many increased threats my son and I packed up and left the beautiful State of Washington. We headed down the Coast and drove through storms, blizzards and hail and fog. I had no idea where we were headed, my trailer banging on the back , and a carsick bassatt, and a freaked cat. My son was in charge of Music and sanity. I was in charge of the maps (sadly), and food ( TUMS) and foul language. I drove many miles with the cat stuck on my head and the bassatt puking in my wheelwell.
We ended up down the California Coast, driving on and on. We were suposed to stop finally in Carmel- we chose this at random, and because my son wanted to see where Clint had been mayor. Five Days into the Uhaul Promise of the Adventure in Moving , I was ready to take ANY suggestion.But on the way to Carmel we actually ended up in a little Coastal Town South of Monterey. And lost in the Fog, that is where we would end our First Leg of the Journey. I ended up working there taking care of an old Dilapitated Victorian Rooming House, and that became a home for me, the boy and the pets. We were mere blocks from the beach, we had deer eating from our garden, and fell asleep listening to gulls and seals bellowing down on the beach. We would stay for 16 monthes.
So that summer we watched Crossfire and alot of political Shows, and my son read 1984 and was adamant that I must VOTE. I was not so convinced and so sad after Dean was removed from the process. My son after everything that we had suffered was very stubborn that we had to vote to”save America”. He kept saying over and over- WHAT if Everyone gave up and didn’t vote- do you want to be a part of THAT?”
Now that was frustating.I had been warned by Legal Officials that I must not register as a regular person, that I should get a special unlisted registration ( so I would not be listed on Dem. prescinct lists).I was told to tell officials at the Voting Center that I was a whistleblower that needed protection and privacy. I was also told to contact the Senator’s Office.It sounded so simple, and even reassuring that I could still vote in relative safety and I knew that 6-6 would be so thrilled.
[[ I also should say that 6-6 has voted with me at every single Election since he was born, and he treasure this. I also have voted in EVERY Election since I was 18, and worked on campaigns since I was a teenager, my first one was Barbara Mikulski many years ago.And my great great Aunt of Baltimore was a Sufferagette. Voting is an Important Part of Our Family History.]]
So that June 2004 I called the Voting Office and started the process and also called Senator Feinstein’s Office. And that is when I started to really learn that SOMETHING WAS VERY WRONG IN AMERICA. I spoke with a Justice person in her office, in charge of voting “issues” and was told to explain about my “Voting Situation”. I explained my request for a special ballot. She then asked” Did you have any problem voting in 2000″. I said “No, I voted with all of my neighbors, and my husband.” She said, “hold the line while I check your vote.” I sat and thought ,” Hmm, what gives.”
Ms.Nice Lady came back on the line. She said “Could you repeat where you Voted and WHO else in your neighborhood voted ?” (Background: Now I was in a College town when I voted- and the renting section with families and college students, and many DEMS, and huge lines at Nursing home/ Retirement facility two blocks from my house. The line at 6 pm was huge, and we even had pizza delivered. People even had to run home and get ID’s. That was the only thing that I thought was really odd, besides the lines. I also KNOW that many people were there for GORE, because I knew alot of the people in the lines, and they were my neighbors. )
So I answered her question, I said my whole street voted and most of my neighbors.
She said “what is your street?”
I named it.
She then said” I only have one name for that street”.
I almost fell out of my chair. I said,”Are you sure you are looking at the Right street?” ” I know that there are privacy rules , but can you tell me the name, I might know them?”
She then named my husband’s name ( we were seperated by this time).
I sat stunned.
I could not believe or understand WHAT had happened to ALL of those people I stood in line with ….
So I said, ” What happened to all of our votes?”
She said, too calmly, ” We now will need you to speak to the following people and file a report, ACLU in SF and NY, and the Human Rights Watch. I also will need to take information from you.”
My Question remained Unanswered.
So I said what was Bothering me” There were Hundreds of us that Voted at that Polling Station, and I KNOW many VOTED FOR GORE.”
She said” I am sure that what you are saying is true. That is why I need you to file a report with the people I have named.”
I asked, feeling ill,” How MANY people did this happen to?”
SILENCE.
“More than you can imagine. Perhaps 1000’s. It is very very imporant that you do what I tell you. That is all I can tell you. Please know that many do not know what happened to their Vote”.
It was at this point, I quietly wrote down everything she said and Promised I would make the calls. I somehow finished that call calmly. And then I very calmly walked outside and threw up on the Calla Lillies in the garden. I had Lost my Home, My friends, and my Husband, and now I realized that maybe I was not really An American Anymore. I felt Invisible.

So I made all the calls to the appropriate people on the LIST that she gave me. And all of the offices asked the same questions about Voting and my history Voting. They also asked if there was legal action to be pursued or needed was I interested, I said yes. They asked about my gender, my marital status, my work, my party affiliation, my WORK, my ACTIVISM. I said I ran a non-profit that did Environmental Research and Education and Advocacy. I was asked if I was a member of any other groups. I was asked if I was a member of the ACLU, I said I was.
And that fall I went to a special office and picked up a special ballot from a Lock Box ( and yes, I thought of Gore when they said that.)And yes, I voted. And yes, I never ever told my son that my 2000 Vote had vanished off the face of the earth. In 2006 the week before I finally told him that I was not sure what happened to my 2000 Vote, and about the 2004 “Experience”. And that November day we went and Voted at a battered old downtown school and we filmed it. And I silently prayed that THIS time it was counted. There were Observers and Watchers, and there were 7 of us on a Special Seperate Yellow Sheet , and the Observers came and spoke to me about my Vote. I have no idea who they were. And as we left in the rain my heart still felt heavy, but my son said, ” See you VOTED, and this time you weren’t Invisible.You are an American Again, I just Know it.”
I hope and pray that he is right.

Yowee……sad but under all circumstances leading up to these days, not surprising. Too bad for sure, but good that your son has seen it all and fully understands the reality of what we all see and feel.
My 25 yr old called the other day and ranted about everything we all do. I told him I apologize, that he got that from me, and it gets worse as you get older. He laughed and said it was OK.
I never realized just how much he watched and listened to me and my friends while to, being a single dad up until after he graduated.
Scary on 2 levels, at least–1st, that you were forced to leave your home because of the run-in with the BigCo & the whisleblower thing, & two, that the Gore vote just evaporated! I’m not clear on whether anybody’s doing anything legally about it, though. Are they?
Demon : what bothers me is that that I was not alone…and that somehow my life, and what I did , WHO I AM as a person vanished my vote. What bothers me even more is that I was no alone.MY WHOLE STREET? GONE? For me I have no doubt that Bush, State by State removed people from the Voting records. People ended up on Felon Lists, and Dead lists,or just vanished. Micheal Moore had asked that all of us go to the polls and film in 2004- remember that? WHERE is all of that film ? My son wants to know WHY Micheal Moore didn’t follow up ? You asked if anyone is doing anything legally ? I don’t really know at this point…. I know that I did all I could….but I have no idea if it worked , and I have no idea if I am even a registered voter, I still don’t have a card here.

EPILOGUE AND A RESPONSE TO DEMON’S QUESTION: I have been racking my brain all morning…about Demon;’s question…see at a certain point you just observe and wait to see what will happen. In 2004 what really bothered me was that Kerry and Edwards within hours gave up the Fight ( all that crap about “we will see that every vote is counted”- and then the next day POOF it was over…and I kept thinking BUT what about the 1000’s that might again have been thrown out ????) Anyways…that did Nothing to instill any faith in me…and then I do remember that at a certain point the Feinstein Complaints and Reports were being turned over to JD ( I don’t know when that happened or even if)….BUT here’s the thing Gonzo at the time I filed my complaints was NOT in charge of JD- that was later….and also something else that is very very odd, Ashcroft RESIGNED ON ELECTION DAY 2004- BEFORE EVEN ALL THE VOTES WERE COUNTED, AND WHILE THE FBI AND JD WERE SUSPOSEDLY CALLING IN REPORTS FROM FLORIDA AND OHIO AND AROUND THE COUNTRY…WHY? DID HE RESIGN BEFORE THE INVESTIGATION WAS DONE? WHY DID HE RESIGN BEFORE THE COUNTS WERE IN THAT DAY ? WHY?
( also if anyone has been watching the Atty Firing Hearings- questions have been about the Firings, Illegal Spying and Survelliance, and yes VOTING issues and rights…and I have thought that was an odd coinicidence…)
That is my followup thoughts for your question Demon…sorry I don’t have more…I would love to know HOW MANY were removed and did their votes just get evaporated in 2000 or in 2004 too?
The caging of votes is a purely Republican trick. Its pathetic that more isn’t being made about Tim Griffin’s involvement in this bullshit.
What a sad tale for us as a Nation Enigma…stealing votes.
I have said this before, but it bears repeating, George W. Bush was not legally elected in 2000 or 2004! Which means that EVERYTHING he has done since then has been a criminal act!
If I could ask for a promise from the Democrats running for office I would want them to promise that they would make sure that Bush was prosecuted for war crimes during their presidency. I know that is not a promise they would, or should, make since it would probably completely derail their campaign. But I think that our country needs to see Bush brought to justice before we can really start to reclaim our country.
I think we should all start putting up fliers in our neighborhoods asking if anybody has seen America, and can they help us find it.
Enigma…. I am not sure where you will get your reward for all you have done, but know this my friend~ If I have it, you need it , it’s yours. Sometimes all one can do is submit and be still~ you reported, gave all the right info to hopefully the right folks. Even if it has disapered into the black void that is our government today, it will take only one brave soul to gather air into their lungs and blow that whistle. Your story should inspire us all the more to vote. To become watchers. And make sure Bush et al are held responsible.

You shouldn’t feel that who you are as a person caused your vote to be vanished. I worry that you may be taking it too personally & allowing events beyond your control to “vanish,” or more precisely, vanquish you. There are a lot of political shenanigans going on, without a doubt, but we as a country have to fight back & keep our clarity of purpose while we’re at it. I totally understand the exhaustion & the difficulty of avoiding the internal collapse that goes along with REALLY discouraging life events like these, but if we let them discourage us so much that we turn our sense of injustice & rage inward so it eats us alive, “they’ve” won by disarming us of our spirit. That’s fundamentally all we have–the rest is just window dressing.
In other words, you haven’t lost anything that you couldn’t afford on some level to lose, & I do know whereof I speak there. (I’m not lecturing from the safety some secure higher ground, which “security” is imaginary in any event :))
I also have no illusions about the ability of law & legal proceedings to cure what ails us politically, but it IS the only real weapon we have. You mentioned the ACLU in there somewhere–they are difficult to get hold of because they’re so overwhelmed, but I urge you to follow up, or with Feinstein’s (?) office. I’m also going to check & see what the name of the agency overseeing election integrity is. I really can’t believe nobody’s doing anything about this. Somebody is, somewhere, but they’re apparently bogged down in red tape & endless “processing.”
Sage: thank you, what bothered me most was that it was indeed 1000’s that are effected- and I know that some of this is indeed Caging like Dusty said….BUT I also know from the Questions I was asked by all 4 offices that yes, indeed People that were involved in Activism, Civil Rights, Environmental Health Issues, EVEN the Democratice Party were Somehow TARGETED OR TAGGED. This is a very worrisome issue, and that I was even asked if I was a single mom. Caging is ONE thing- this is something more worrisome- this is Diminished Status of 1000’s of Americans- Women, Minorities, etc.And yes Silent Fallout is all about What can happen when Things Go Wrong with One’s Govt, but I have come to realize when this is all said and done- we will ALL have tales from Surviving the Bush Regime.

I actually wrote back when the Dems were fundraising this spring” What are you going to do for me if I send you $10 ?” I didn’t get any answers. ( maybe I was not willing to Pay enough).
Demon: I have read what you wrote, I also know that you have not known me long. So you don’t know My Whole Story. About Loss, I can not agree, especially as this has deeply effected my son, who believes so strongly in America, in US as WE THE PEOPLE. It is not as simple as that , I GAVE, from my heart and with courage, and I did it because I KNOW that I as a Strong person had to take a stand on many things during this decade…..( please read my post of June20th, 2007 at watergate summer, when I returned). Loss is something that is painful, NO ONE should ever have to LOSE their Home and their friends because the Govt is not capable of properly Prosecuting Criminals or Criminal Corporations. Esp. when Said Evil Corporation is best Buds with the Bushies, and has a Long History with them. I can tell you , that makes things Dangerous.
Why the VOTE was so devastating, Because AFTER all that my son and I had been through- it was the ONE thing that we still clung to- that Identified US as Americans…..After being Put on a NO FLY LIST, after being having HOMELAND SECURITY ( Inspected!!!) destroy my POD from the West Coast ( they stole our books on science and religion) and many other things( they even left us a note in the POD)…..and this was after suffering Death threats Dead pets, Wounded and Dead Friends ( Very interesting “car accidents”)….Along the way we LOST friends, family, pets, security,home, a marriage, work, and a Sense of This Being Our Country… You try explaining THAT to a little boy, and then a teen, who has watched ALL of this, remember for me , this ALL started under Clinton and then changed over to Bushco….and ONE by ONE the Officials in DC left and called us…and said ” Sorry, we have to go…we can not stay Under THIS Administration.”
This is NOT a matter of Red Tape- that is total crap. sorry but it is. 1000’s of Americans LOST their RIGHT to Vote….This is not about being Bogged Down, THIS IS ABOUT CORRUPTION AND ABOUT GONZO AND THE WHITE HOUSE DESTROYING OUR SYSTEM OF JUSTICE AND CORRUPTING OUR GOVERNMENT AT EVERY LEVEL…..( and I know all about the poor Witnesses and cases AND LIVES that were effected and left vulnerable after the US Attorneys were Fired and Removed. on Dec 7th 2006…)
And WHY didn’t I follow up that fall of 2004- well, you don’t know me, but please do read about WHAT happened to me that fall 2004 and HOW I ALMOST DIED…and then you will understand that sometimes ….sometimes…WE DO NEED TO DEPEND ON PEOPLE TO FOLLOWTHROUGH….IN CASE WE DIE.
I know you mean well, but Until you have walked in my shoes…which god forbid may you NEVER EVER have to do….I don’t want to hear about ANYONE EVER BEING OVERWHELMED….. and that I or MY son deserved to experience Loss.
And now we have 1000’s of people like me and my son, Disenfranchised and declared Dead BY THIS GOVERNMENT….from the Voting to Katrina,to the Iraqi VETS and their Families, have no doubt THAT ALL OF US ARE INDEED IN THIS BOAT…IT GROWS DAILY…..
I of course read your blog before so I am aware of your circumstances…and you and 6-6 have my sympathy. I cheered at what Gryphen said…I’m so there on that! All of us can request absentee balloting when the voting information booklet is sent out. I figure I have a better chance at going through the postal service and having my vote counted. Maybe not…but it seems less likely to be tampered with. Before this…we’d go to a little church nearby to vote on a punch out machine (chads) and the thing is…they had the Dems on one side of the room and the Repubs on the other. Therefore…they had the opportunity to just gather up the the Dem boxes of votes and dispose of them. I only became suspect of this in the last 3-4 years when more of this hijacking the vote info came out. I’m sure you’ve seen the TV shows about it in addition to Moore’s movie. I don’t know how safe absentee voting is…but I do not want to have an electronic vote. If people would just request the absentee ballot they’ll send it back to you…you can vote and it is sealed and no one knows by the envelope what your choice is. I checked carefully to see if anything would indicate my vote or it could be seen through to the inside…and I couldn’t find it. I don’t know what any of us can do to fight this thing…this is just one suggestion on my part. But they cheated us in 2000 and 2004…what makes us think it will be on the up and up in 2008? The Repubs aren’t going to give on it now…they’ve too much at stake…they may not have the Congress for years to come…but they sure and hell want to make sure they’ve got the presidency. We owe each other to do the best we can do. I’ve even gotten my MIL to go absentee.
That’s some story enigma. I praise you for your Washington stance and it sickens me that it does happen. What happened to your vote really scares the hell out of me. of course I have heard of that before but I am stunned that is was simply blown off.
I am afraid of those damn machines as they can be monkeyed with to give a desired vote regardless of who you want. That is why I have done my damnedest to keep the issue alive but aside from Ca which I did a story on last week or so I don’t see any action being taken.
I am afraid it is going to happen again in 08 if the chief idiot doewsn’t cancel elections and declare martial order so he can continue his wars and new world order.
Remember this JIm, sadly it was not just California this was across the country( says I who have now voted in six places,three States since Bushco stole the first election)….THOUSANDS…THOUSANDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY..and the ACLU and Human Rights were taking reports from across the Country- NOT just the JD worked in this issue…( The JD then was hijacked by Gonzo- so you can use your imagination about WHAT he did with the investigations….hmmmm) and BUT do not give up…we can fight these Criminals…I will NEVER give up…so don’t you either…
SUMO: thanks…great advice…and I too voted in 2000 in a Divided Room( which means ONE side was empty). I had a Chad ballot that time…( and that is reassuring eh?) and 2004 A Special Ballot, and then in 2006 gulp…Die-I-bold…gulp…good for you to come up with your own best remedy….I mean hell we ATM and get a reciept…so WHY can ‘t there be a paper trail…WHY? because they( REPUGS)don’t want us to have a trail..god forbid….thanks again…

I did NOT say that you deserved to lose everything, as you apparently have interpreted my post.
My sole point that I wished to make not only to you, but the community here at Sirens at large, is that when we give up trying to hold them accountable, whether they’re big chemical companies or politicians “vanishing” votes, they have indeed won. I don’t doubt anything you say about what you’ve been through, & I know for a fact what loss is. (You don’t know me, either). However, if & when you’re ready to pick up & resume the good fight, other people WILL be there to help.
Demon: Let’s get something straight- YOU did indeed mention loss- re-read WHAT you wrote. I did not misinterrept Anything- other than you made light of Something YOU know Nothing about. Every vote that is lost like yours and your neighbors is a loss for America and what it once stood for. I vote every year and only once did I not vote.
I had moved a week before the election and went to the new precinct. When I explained my situation and told them that I had just moved and wanted to vote at the polling place for my new residence I was told I could not.
They told me to go to my old polling place and vote there. So I went over to my old place and spoke to an official. I explained to them what had occurred and than they told me since I had moved I could not vote there.
When I protested saying that I was being denied my right to vote they shrugged their shoulders and said there was nothing that could be done. The law was the law.
I felt cheated that year and believed that the only reason I was unable to vote was because I was a registered Democrat.
I have since changed my party affiliation and am now a registered Independent. And I still vote every election. I do not miss voting in the primaries since the parties pick the nominee, however I vote for who I feel will do the best job for America and not what party they belong too.
Glad that your still fighting the good fight. Keep fighting for in the end it is well worth the effort.

I thank you for appreciating WHAT is as stake…and WHY all of these Votes are people like you and me….You keep fighting too….WE ARE ALL worth it…this is OUR Country….and with virtual neighbors like you I know this country is indeed worth fighting for….
( My great great Aunt was a suffregette- I take this very serious…and I know I am also fighting to perserve what she fought for…The People’s Right to Vote…)

We had a multitude of problems here in Kern County during the primary in 06. It was so bad the state conducted hearings on it. Diebold was cavalier about the whole thing but our Republican state rep said it best when he said the disenfranchised voters could sue the pants off Diebold and they fucking deserved it. I attended the hearing and wrote about it here:

Debra Bowen our State Secretary was so impressed she had it permanently on her website while she ran for office. She conducted the hearing. I talked with her at length several times about the bullshit of the electronic voting machines and the lackof training.
There is nothing, this side of our civil rights, more precious as a citizen, than our right to vote for our representation…and when its fucked with..its time to kick some ass and take some names.
Ah Enigma your story just makes me so sad. It’s gonna get worse before it gets worse. That’s how I feel. What is the point of anything if you don’t have a voice. If your vote doesn’t count then all the other issues don’t matter. I like to think I can focus on bringing this war to an end but you have reminded me that our voting rights are THE most important.

I should have mentioned that it was back in 1982 or 83, it sure seems like only yesterday even though it was a long time ago.
I never forgot the feeling of disenfranchisement though.

to everyone that spoke out on this post I thank you, thank you for taking the time to read Our Story and also for sharing Insights and Thoughts. I am passionate about this Issue, Voting is a Right, a Civil Rights Issue, a Humanity Issue. It is dear to my heart and I treasure that we can be a part of this Country.
I can not apologize anymore for the pain that my son and I have endured, and I can not apologize for being furious, and wanting my Country back. And yes, I learned Under the Bush Regime that We ALL Still Matter, but that we only matter if we fight for each other together. I have never stopped fighting, and after reading these comments , why would I ? You are all a part of WE THE PEOPLE…..We will get Our Country Back….in spite of the Criminals in the Whitehouse.
