Final thoughts on the Iowa caucus..
January 3, 2008 by Dusty
Biden and Dodd dropped out immediately after the final vote was cast and counted. The bible vote came out en mass for Huck and Hillary was gracious when she congratulated Obama and Edwards for coming in first and second respectively.
Dodd is the head of the banking committee and a good fighter against the Telco’s quest to get retroactive immunity. Biden also chairs an important committee, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and his views on the war make him valuable to ending the war and how Congress deals with the Shrub’s horrible foreign policy decisions.
I only hope that Hillary gets used to coming in third..which would make this a great horserace for Obama and Edwards.
One important figure coming out of Iowa..the youth vote..it was huge and 57% of them voted for Obama. The youth vote is categorized as anyone under…30..god, do I feel old right now. Also, the number of Iowan’s participating was three times the amount of the 04 election..which is a plus as well.

The terror alert has just been raised to fucking scarlet!!!!
If you think that Huckabee is only supported by the religious, think again. He is the worst possible choice for the democrats. His good old boy sweet dimpled big brown eyed affect is appealing to many, many people, well beyond the religious zealots.
He’s just so . . . nice. Innocuous. That he’s ignorant and uneducated and oblivious to foreign policy and wants to enact the most punishing kind of tax as an alternative to taxing the rich motherfuckers who are ruining this country (across the board consumption tax, which will disproportionately affect the middle class) won’t matter. He’s nice. Sweet. Soft spoken. Sounds so reasonable.
He is A DISASTER!!!! and I can’t quit wringing my hands over this. I can only hope that NH is going to investigate him further before casting a vote for the nice guy. Huckabee is terrifying.
Oh no Lynette, no way I meant that..I just meant that the Bible-thumping crowd turned out big for him..which is probably why he won for the Rethugs..
I think he is the worst of the lot..he acts like a centrist, but isn’t…he is ignorant of foreign policy issues as bad as Bush is.
Iowa is part of the bible belt..I think we will get a better view of how the public thinks in the upcoming primaries..
Dusty I think it is going to be Edwards and Obama all the way and in NH huckabee will fall to McCain Giuliani then Romney though who knows in the end. I just want to see Obama and Edwards with either as the Pres. I just want the WH back for the country.
Jim, at this point, I have no idea who I will support for Pres. I am still a Kucinich kinda woman..but that doesn’t preclude me from moving to support either of those gents if one of them gets the Democraptic nod
i’m hoping you’re right dusty. i haven’t been to iowa for a long time. that so many turned out for obama is encouraging. i don’t know if they’re rabid foaming at the mouth religious loonies like we have down here in Oklahoma and Arkansas. i read this morning that he had a huge support from fundamentalist christians and home schoolers. ack!! ack!!!!! i feel like a have a big wad of hair in my throat and can’t get it out. i am so frightened by this man and his nicey-nice appearance. so seductive in these wild times when there’s so much animosity on talk radio, in congress, etc.
i am afraid that many people will mistake his good ol’ boy schtick as a way to bring the country together and nothing could be further from the truth.
my dream ticket would be obama-edwards. i love hillary and i know all of the reasons why so many do not. i was surprised by the way it turned out last night. but i think obama and edwards would be unbeatable. edwards could give obama a little more fire and spine for standing up to the corporate thugs, and obama could be mr. nice guy and inspire us all to be better human beings.
which is what huckabee appears to do. only huckabee, totin’ his four year bible college degree in ~ what was it, religion? ~ and ignorant, as he has proven to be, even about right now, in the moment, urgent events affecting the nation (most recently, the NIE report, which he knew nothing about 12-14 hours after the reveal), will be dangerous. dangerous. we can’t afford four more years of incompetence even if it comes in a nice little soft package.
my god, i’ve lost my mind on this. i have literally been wringing my hands all day. i know my people, and the mood in this part of the country today is hey! huckabee!!!! from rethugs AND dems.
okay, backing away from the keyboard. taking a deep breath. all will be well all will be well all will be very well.
huckabee!! waaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!
Lynette, it IS scary to think the Huckster could get the Rethug nod..but one big thing going against him at this point..the party faithful hate him..including the entire RNC.
thats a good thing in a roundabout way
it is a good thing and i can only hope they’re as effective at sabotaging one of their own as they were with al gore and john kerry.
we can hope. i know they’re scared shitless. this swamp monster they activated when they recruited the religious loonies is something they have always controlled in the past. now the loonies, coupled with those who are too busy to see behind the smiling face, might just end up fucking them.
that would be sweet. except it would mean that the dems lose again and that would likely mean that the supreme court would be lost in total. bush has been more effective at installing right wing judges at every level of judicial system than any previous president.
in a perfect world, zealotry would be seen as unsavory, whether it is wearing a mask with a bomb strapped to its chest shouting allah akbar, or whatever they say before they go to fuck those virgins, or whether it’s hallelujah-ing from the front row at the reverend big-tooth-smiling-motherfucker’s bigass baptist church on the golden rock of jesus.
that would be sweet. i won’t hold my breath. the zealots are easily seduced. until that changes, they’ll be fair game for any power mad dictator or political party or corporatist system like our own.
there is good news, though: democratic turnout, even on a terrible, cold, horrible night, exceeded all expectations.
that gives me hope. to fight the rethug machine of corruption and the methods used in 2000 and 2004, we’ll need numbers so huge they can’t cage us out of the running or intimidate at the polls or fuck with the programming.
Huck says all the right things which doesn’t endear him to the RNC one damn bit. He talks shit about Big Business, which really chaps the RNC’s ass, but DOES endear him to the masses.
Like you state BaB..the dem’s came out en mass last night, and thats a good thing that I hope bodes well for the rest of the damn silly season.
