what’s wrong with us?

that was a question asked by a reader of mine over at life’s journey. i posted on how the kenyans mobilized and kept in contact with each other during this time of turmoil and whatnot. it is a fine, fine question. i have pondered over it until it depresses me. there are lots of folks out there who are mobilized and fighting for a good end- but we don’t all agree on that end result. for example, i am a kucinich supporter and i have been rallying around the kucinich campaign almost since day 1. i feel he would be a step in the right direction- but the obama supporters are working just as hard to get him elected. folks mobilized for a common good- but, well, you get the idea. not everyone shares my view that we need to shut this country down and take it back by force of numbers in order to get some accountability and movement away from the corruption. and they are probably right. the corruption cuts deep- in every layer of our ‘way of life’. we would have to shut things down indefinitely to sort this all out- and in the end- we would still have our forests cut down, our infrastructures crumbling and our tax money evaporating in the ether. why?
well, because we “elect” the government that the ruling class wants us to have. it really is that simple. we have been made to believe that we change our government peacefully every election year. no turmoil like in kenya or burma or ‘those third world countries.’ no, of course there isn’t. it wouldn’t be in the best interests of big corporate and the wealthy elite to have the ‘great unwashed masses’ have their panties in a knot. they manipulate and machinate and in the end- the candidates who are trotted before us are not the ones we would pick ourselves- the dennis ks or the ron pauls- instead we get the pre-packaged romneys and clintons. made to order. aim to please to get elected- and then- it’s back to business. john edwards isn’t my favorite candidate due to his churchiness but i know he loves his family and he wants to promote a domestic agenda that will actually benefit americans. dennis kucinich is short and funny looking with a wife quite a bit younger than he- but he wants to save our constitution and get out of the middle east.
but who do we get as the front runners? clinton and obama. we are being told time and again that the race is between these TWO. kucinich is excluded at every turn and the media doesn’t want to be kind or accessible to john edwards. why? because they are a threat to the status quo.
so what is wrong with us? for too long, we have had too much. do you honestly think that a generation of folks who haven’t had to work hard- who have cleaning staff to clean their mcmansions and drive through eateries for dinner- would have clue one how to fight for rights they never had to think about? our parents loved us too much. they didn’t expect us to do anything other than be. we were given so much we didn’t realize what it meant to have to earn it. we have had people at our beck and call so long- and conveniences at every turn- that we thought nothing of checking out of politics to let our ‘elected officials’ take care of things for us. boy, did they ever. so here we are- with folks telling us what to do (gasp) and following our every movement without our permission (how dare they?!) and we haven’t got clue one what to do other than be outraged. there aren’t any folks we can pay to vote for us or to fight a revolution for us. we have marginalized and imprisoned minority folks for so long- they have checked right out of ‘our system’ and have their own agenda. while we play suburban family and pop out kids like designer pets- the government has had free reign. well, we are reaping what we have sown.
that’s what’s wrong with us. the bigger questions are- can we overcome ourselves? and is it already too late?
