open letter from obama to lgbt community

February 29, 2008 by Betmo

obama“I’m running for President to build an America that lives up to our founding promise of equality for all – a promise that extends to our gay brothers and sisters. It’s wrong to have millions of Americans living as second-class citizens in this nation. And I ask for your support in this election so that together we can bring about real change for all LGBT Americans.Equality is a moral imperative. That’s why throughout my career, I have fought to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans. In Illinois, I co-sponsored a fully inclusive bill that prohibited discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity, extending protection to the workplace, housing, and places of public accommodation. In the U.S. Senate, I have co-sponsored bills that would equalize tax treatment for same-sex couples and provide benefits to domestic partners of federal employees. And as president, I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.”

Is it my imagination or has he come over to queers to sort of whisper in our ears, what he hasn’t said on national television in clear sight of the conservatives he’s also wooing?

I think you hit the nail on the head DarkDaughta! ;)

to me- the leading edge obama seems to have over hillary- he hasn’t been in the establishment long enough yet to be as thoroughly tainted as she has become. there was a time when i really admired her as a person and as a woman. i hope i can hold out on my admiration for obama as an intelligent, seemingly genuine candidate. i personally think that both candidates should be shouting what they do indeed stand for- in every microphone they can find- instead of cowering behind political correctness and courting certain focus groups. not going to happen in my lifetime. i will settle for the least offensive of the 3 who are left. huckabee is so irrelevant at this point.

I have to agree with darkdaughta– why not make this statement in public, in the debates, while the cameras roll, national spotlight? Still I have to give him credit for saying the don’t ask don’t tell, Bill Clinton bullshit was really offensive and discriminatory. Maybe that was just what he was hoping would happen in the Oval office w Mis Lewinski–no asking or telling.
I have heard others say they think one thing Obama has going for him is “less corrupt” not so much an insider. Let’s face it though politics at this level involves some fancy moves. You KNOW the fundies will pounce all over the GLBT issue… hell, it was the “gay marriage issue” card they played as a distraction in the last election. Pay no attention to the shockingly awful war in Iraq…. it’s gay marriage we must focus on. Oh that & you never change leaders in the middle of a war.
I think Obama is genuinely good person to do the job, and don’t so much feel like I am having to settle for him- but then again, the election year is young.
The Reich wing is going to pull some strange shit, “my friends.” as McCain would say.

Before you vote, please make sure YOU know your candidate.

If you take time to fill in the blanks that most of mainstream media leaves out, you’ll learn that Obama has been ‘missing in action’ for a lot of things because he’s been too busy inflating his presidential suit:

He was ‘missing in action’ …

    - from his own state legislative record in Illinois. His entire record was created in ONE YEAR’s time, facilitated by Emil Jones Jr.
    - from leadership in a host of critical community issues in his own district in Chicago during his State Senate years

    - from a Senate vote last year on a nonbinding resolution in that labeled the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization (Clinton voted for the measure and faced heat from Obama and other Democratic rivals for supporting a measure pushed by the Bush administration.)
