Excellent write up in the posted link Betmo. Marriage does afford all kinds of very serious legal rights. I live in Oregon where we have had a frickin’ circus over teh matter. A few years ago, they allowed gay marriage, then a few months later, rescinded the marriages. Recently there was a Civil Union bill- endorsed by the Guvnah, and was put into law– almost- until some out of state fundies decided they would throw in a legal challange. The whole thing was sandbagged & tied up in court.Upon review, the judge declared the appeal unworthy & a form of Gay Marriage was *on again*.
To have such serious rights vollied about, back and forth, off & on is an equal justice nightmare. A few different sets of gay friends got married & unmarried a few times. My question is- do you have to give wedding gifts each time it’s on again? the most recent victory took place at the County Courthouse. Community activists ordered a whole lot f pies & dubbed it *piece of the pie day*. It was wonderful to see all thse couples, giddy, happy to get the legal sanction or nod to share their lives of some sort of equal footing. One couple was quoted as saying the best money they ever spent (to get their official paperwork). Another was saying they thought this day would never come. Yet another saying they had lived for 14 years with their partner’s kids, and is now an official parent. It was sweet, and the happiness level was through the roof. Still a damned shame we are having to put up with people still struggling in the 21st century just to get basic equal rights~ a piece of the pie.
