Prejudice & Politics

May 1, 2008 by Fran

I have to admit, there have been some topics of conversation re politics that have absolutely blown me away. At work the other day, a coworker said she was undecided about the Presidential primary. As the conversation went on, she announced she would not vote republican. Whew! Otherwise, that would have been one short conversation!
But she said she really did not like Hillary, sick of Bill in particular, but “not sure she was ready for a black person to be president!” I damned near fell off the chair. A part of me wanted to deck her right there in the employee lounge area. But I took a deep breath. I first commended her for not being inspired to vote republican. Then I asked-, where does this race issue come from? I feel like I live in some bubble because race & gender issues influencing my vote are entirely “off the table” so to speak, politically & in general. I feel broadsided by such remarks- a sideways slam you did not see coming. A Complete non issue for me. So this conversation was highly volatile.
But yet, she was just being honest, while insensing me, to the core.

I went on to say that for me, I could care less about color, or gender. or sexual orientation. I look at voting record, actions & integrity. I am not interested in sound bites, or manufactured campaign strategies. I loathe the low blow Hillary Clinton commercials with Osama bin Laden & images of Barack Obama meshed together in a not-at-all subliminal suggestiveness a la Hillary-the-desperate style. Damn the media for spending excessive debate time talking about flag pins & reverends.

I have had other people play into the twisted guilt by association name game- Barack’s middle name is Hussein.
The implication that he is somehow linked to Saddam Hussein, or some Muslim origin- because we all know Muslim is the new Communist. Fear card. Guilt by association. Never mind that the worldwide Muslim Population is about 1.84 billion & vastly peace loving people. The government & the media would like us to think Muslim=bad. Also never mind Obama is NOT muslim. No need for facts or rational thought- just keep the bias spin coming. Sheeple are taught that if they hear it on the news or in the junk news sector, it must be true. I encouraged “undecided coworker” to read up on voting records & get informed about the differences re the candidates, and refrained from asking how could you possibly be undecided?

I would vote for a green martian if said martian made sense & was ethical & would get us the hell out of these wars. Kang for President?

* Kang is a lovely green, one eyed, drooling, many tentacled Martian, from the Simpsons cartoon.
He can be seen mostly around Halloween flying his spaceship, laughing at Earthlings.

Wow! Very good response. I just do not get it and could never understand prejudice of any kind. Many people will never understand the danger we are in or the criticality of getting a President who is going to lead us out of the dark tunnel Bush has us in.
Sex, color, nothing matters but getting a leader who is going to get back our America and fight for all Americans not just the wealthy. We can not allow Mcsame that should be the motivation in November like it or not. Having the election stolen once again to keep this mess going is my prime concern!

    Good aftermoon, Fran.

While I certainly worship our new Green Martian Overlord, Kang, long may he rule! I’d be remiss if I didn’t comment about his untidy habits. I’m referring, of course, to his addiction to humans. The next of kin would appreciate it if, while sucking the juices out of one of our fellow citizens, he could leave enough around the facial area to allow identification. Thank you.

What’s that you say? The White House Correspondent’s Dinner has been cancelled? Hmmm…

so, what did she say about why she considers race a factor?

betmo- nope, she just kind of listened as I explained why none of that matters, but what the person has to offer. I ended with I’d vote for a green martian if the martian was happening & I had to zip back to work.
She did not respond to the question & It felt weird to ask, because I try to avoid talking politics unless it;s folks who seem to want to.

Jim: Amen! WE need auditable voting processes.
No more supreme court or Diebold making decisions for us.

Trog: Forgot about Kang’s appetite. We can feed him republicans, starting from the top. I doubt anyone would object!

Nope. Says he’s allergic. Seems the Republicans are too rancid even for him!

It’s interesting that she felt comfortable enough to even say what she did Fran. I am someone that has a very descriptive face…which means when I am floored by something someone says or does I am unable hide it.

But kudos to you for being able to bite a hole in your lip and continue to keep a conversation going with the co-worker.

What eats at me is that there are undoubtedly thousands if not millions of voters with the same mindset.

trog: Probably- rancid, toxic and nasty all at once.
But at least his spaceship vehicle seems like a high tech hybrid, and he’s someone you can look in the eye.(not just because he only has one!)
