"Ronald Dumsfeld"- Shit runs downhill. Yes- it became obvious after the widespread abuse @ Abu Ghraib was made public- the ones to take the fall were the lower ranking soldiers who were both following orders, and allowed to abuse. I remember Rumsfeld's response when Abu Ghraib abuse was exposed- he said it was unfortunate the photos were released! He was sorry the truth came out-- not sorry there was grave human rights abouses happening. I remember making the sarcastic quip that the way he will *fix* the problem-- is strict rules of * NO CAMERAS ALLOWED*.. in other words no pictures /no evidence/ no problem.
Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft & let's not forget the snake- Cheney worked on the guidelines of how far the tirture & abuse could go. Hell they even reclassified the Geneva Conventions as something open to interpretation. How they got away with this- I will never know. Plus-- there were a whole bunch of other photos that were never released because thery were deemed to potentially be something that would "harm the troops" (read if they showed those pics on al jazeera news, there would have been riots in the streets & hell to pay). Stress positions & making men pile on top of each other naked were the least of the offenses. People died under our "watch" there.
Of course the highest level knew about it, and they still do re Gitmo.
To think no one paid the price- lost their job, went through trials for there high crimes. It's an all time low for this country.
