10 homophobic AG’s weigh in.

June 1, 2008 by Dusty

I call them homophobic because, well….why the hell else would they get involved in Cali’s legal system? Huh? Come on, do you have another reason to cite?

Also, these 10 homophobic assholes are in states that don’t allow gay marriage because they have implemented laws against it. So, I rest my case. From Jurist:

Ten US state attorneys general have petitioned the Supreme Court of California to postpone implementation of its May 15 decision legalizing same-sex marriages until after state elections in November. California is slated to allow all same-sex couples, regardless of state citizenship, to wed in California, but each of the 10 petitioning states bans recognition of same-sex marriages. The attorneys general – from Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah – wrote Thursday that if California starts issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on June 17 as announced, many same-sex couples in their states would become “marriage tourists” in California and the states’ courts would then face unfair, extensive and burdensome litigation on whether to recognize the marriages. The AGs also joined conservative Christian legal advocacy group Alliance Defense Fund’s recent petition in saying that deciding the issue before California citizens vote in November on a likely proposed amendment to the California state constitution banning same-sex marriage could lead to legal havoc. Attorneys for the city and county of San Francisco have responded that a stay would mingle judicial and political processes and would deny rights based on a merely proposed state constitutional amendment. The New York Times has more. The San Francisco Chronicle has local coverage.

Recognition of California same-sex marriages is not universally opposed in other US jurisdictions. Earlier this month, one day before the California ruling, New York Governor David Paterson ordered that state agencies recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages as legal marriages in New York.

Friggin homophobes….I find this bullshit extremely unsettling. Hatred is never positive…its always negative and the rationale for this type of behavior is never ever logical.

There are always bigots around against equality. When the Massachusetts State Supreme Court ruled to legalize gay marriage in 2003 the towns & cities were given a few months until May 17, 2004 when gay marriage would go into effect. Of course Romney & his cronies tried everything to stop it but failed. Even after gay marriages were performed they tried to get an amendment on to the ballot until June 14th, 2007 when it was finally defeated in the State House. For those who are still uncomfortable with this check out our short produced to educate & defuse the controversy. They did the same thing in Oregon –twice. Outside entities- mostly extreme right wing fundies began legal battles regarding Oregon’s same sex couples right to marry or have a legally binding union. The first time they actually successfully overturned it (people drove around with a *one man one woman* bumper sitcker, right next to the Bush/Cheney bumper sticker- which is ironic, since Cheney’s daughter is gay!).
People actually got married in Portland & later those unions were reversed & revoked. I gave my friends a wedding present & everything!
Don’t know if they asked for the marriage certificates back, they moved after the reversal. But equal right advocates went back to the drawing board & wrote up new legislation.
Oregon’s legislation has no ceremony requirement. All marriage and civil union legislation require a ceremony, whether religious or civil, to be considered valid. Oregon couples are only required to register their domestic partnerships through the submission of a paper form. Additionally, the Oregon statute contemplates that the domestic partnerships are only valid in the state of Oregon. All other marriage and civil union laws assume the validity of such relationships in every other jurisdiction. These changes may have been placed to avoid any conflict with the Oregon constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
    * Oregon has a ballot initiative process in which anyone can put forth a ballot initiative- good for the people to be able to propose anything they want, if they can get enough signatures to meet the State requirement– but in order to have it not be radically changed- sliced & diced by the legislature– people make them as “Constitutional Amendments”- where they really don’t belong- the constitution is supposed to be the framework, not the bits & pieces of what should be legistative bills. Sometimes it results in 2 volume, hundres of pages long Voters guidebooks, and having to write constitutional amendments to make changes.

Interestingly, the 2nd attempt to foil the domestic partnership laws from seeing the light of day, was not even about the measure itself, but how the State validated the petition signatures! How lame is that?
