Thanks to Dusterella, betmo and bigassbelle for your continued support for the space program, and particularly for all those wide-eyed astronauts who take such incredible risks. Heaven knows, they are up there today with fixing the toilet as a high priority. That's a sacrifice that's above and beyond.

I think the economy and the damage Bush has done to it will sadly play a part in how much budget the Space Program and NASA will be given.

NASA has been underfunded for a long time. As a former employee of the Space Program, I was there during the heyday and its disheartening to see it suffer. For the safety of our astronauts it needs more funding at least on a basic level.

our space program is something that feels, to me, like our national parks system, like preservation of our wilderness areas, all of that. it's a treasure, and not something to be turned for benefit of the military or business.

fat fucking chance. i keep waiting for some kind of product placement on the space station. i think the appeal of space for me is that it is unclaimed territory, unsullied by corporate interests (yet).

this is not the least of obama's problems. i fear we are doomed. thus spake the woman with a headache and tired eyes.

betmo, thanks for the intriguing question. I have vague knowledge and hunches but not enough to write about. Is Kucinich's record a good place to start?
sagefever, I am glad to know of a kindred spirit here who can be moved to tears by the drama of the space program. Just today the unity of space effort is being beautifully illustrated by the deployment of Japan's Kibo scientific laboratory. Houston, USA (with Canadian presence), Russia, France (ESA), and Japan will have control rooms working together in finely choreographed cooperation. The goal, in which so many nations have invested money and pride, is to keep the ISS in orbit, crew members (born in the U.S., Canada, Russia and Japan) alive and well, and to make the path of scientific progress clear and peaceful for everyone on the planet.
Thanks to both for good comments.

A resurgence of NASA will be most welcome,I was crying after watching "in the Shadow of the Moon",mostly because I felt the breadth of what we had done, the sense of unity the world had those few heady days....and feared we would never see the like again.I hope that we see space as the force that unites this small planet, not some sort of turf to be fought over with weapons.

what do you know about the freedom of space being threatened by american interests? i realize it's a vague question but dennis kucinich was fighting to keep the military from carving up space for weapons and whatnot- and breaking the treaty to keep space neutral.

i don't have much time to write myself but the brain is full of stuff to write about ;)
