Fran, McCain is constantly forgetting what he's said, how he voted. It will be more interesting to see how the media reacts to his constant dissembling. Since what he's actually said and done is a matter of public record, perhaps even the media will refuse to give this moron a pass. No, strike that. He's not a moron, and that is precisely the kind of remark I don't want to make. What he is, frankly, is an opportunist who clearly thinks the world owes him this Presidency because he was a P.O.W. in Vietnam.

When Obama is elected (it feels great to type that), perhaps he will create programs similar to the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) which, when FDR's New Deal created it, put young men who were unemployed to work building roads, fixing the levees, building and repairing dams. Just a thought.

"I don't know what you are describing at this moment", said McCain- hey John it's your crappy voting record! I expect to see a lot more *deer in the headlights* action from McCain~ not remembering what he said or if he said it.
As for tours in the so called Green Zone.....It has become the *target zone* & gets mortered often. I'm with you Diva- no go on the tour factor- in fact I want the guvmnt to end the troops tours.
It will be interesting to observe just how out of touch McSame is & watch his own campaign spiral further away from reality.
As for a study to examine what went wrong with Katrina-- 2 short answers:
1. Everything
2. Bush appointed the critical FEMA head who was clueless. All the pros who were in the know were ignored.

No need to spend a dime on the study.
Fix the levees.
Help people rebuild, avoiding rebuilds in the worst/lowest areas.
Clean it up.

I still have this crazy idea that the military could/should figure out a way to break up/disrupt hurricaine storms brewing out at sea. They have all this military might- why not use it for something good?

Larry, the arrogance of these Republicans never ceases to amaze me. Yes, clearly a birthday party was more important. I wonder if "Brownie" was there, too, because he sure wasn't doing a heckuva job in New Orleans.

Don't forget after Katrina devasted those masses, Bush stopped in Arizona enroute to New Orleans to help McCain celebrate one of his many, many birthdays.

Obviously a birthday party was far more important to both of them than the thousands whose lives were destroyed.

Robb, you're kidding me, right? He offered to give Obama a guided tour of the Green Zone? I'm sorry, but guided tours are the pervue of myself, and of Fran - we are the travel agents, and if anyone is going to do a tour, it would be us. And I don't think I'm interested.

He needs some new shades. Those ones he's been wearing lately make him look like he's just had cataract surgery.

I think he wants to do those townhall meetings to dilute the impact of the bigtime debates in the fall where he's going to get his ass kicked worse than Nixon's vs Kennedy. I bet he's hoping nobody will tune in if they've heard it all before and they're numb.

Did you hear him invite Obama to ride in the same plane on the way? Great idea John! If anything goes wrong, Shrillary and The Huckster can step back in. Ditto for his idea of personally giving Obama a guided tour of Iraq's green zone. Gotta make you wonder about McCain's idea of national security...

Belle, your father has a real point: we suffered through Reagan, who was most assuredly too old to be President. I wonder, seriously, if Reagun had not already begun to show signs of Alzheimer's while he was in office.

But McCain speaks poorly; he's arrogant; his temper is famously terrible; he's dumped one wife for another who is filthy rich; he's not the sharpest pencil in the drawer. He probably suffers from some degree of PTSD, and he's been a mediocre Senator. One who forgets his own voting record, which is what this post was about, actually. Convenient forgetfulness.

Yes, he feels entitled. No kidding. Frankly, when I heard his speech in New Orleans last week, I was terrified by the tone - that soft voice, twisting Obama's campaign slogans into something he wants his base to be afraid of. We cannot afford him at all!

no shit. it's getting ridiculous. my 91 year old father says "john mccain? he's too old to be president" and i get jumped on for repeating it.

but i think he's right. or there is this, and i've been thinking this a lot lately: i think the man has some mental problems. i mean that he has a dreadful temper, he's incredibly self centered and selfish (as evidenced by his "family values" abandonment of his first wife), and he went through hell in vietnam.

that combination of things makes me wonder if he somehow doesn't simply feel entitled to be president. it's not that he really thinks he's particularly capable. he's not even worried about it. it's all about him, about this country paying him back for what he went through, AS IF he was the only one who suffered that way.

it's an entitlement mindset. he doesn't bother to delve deeply into the issues. he's not particularly educated or astute and he has never been a big policy guy. he's a get-along-guy, one who likes to be the big man, to win adulation and acclaim, especially for things like being "a maverick," or in high school, for being "mcnasty," or post-vietnam, "war hero."

but governing? not so much. that's why he's content to just hand off the process of developing policies about how he will govern the country to a select few lobbyists, the ones who stroke him, tell him what a great guy he is, assure him they'll do what's right.

he is not particularly smart. not particularly anything except totally indentured to power and money and in desperate need of payback. he sees the presidency as payback for his suffering.

fuck that. he scares me. seriously. bush III isn't even close. he will be a disaster on a scale we've never seen before. given what we've seen in the last 7 years, that's horrifying.
