Divided States of America

I pledge a grievance to the flag of the plighted states of America, & to the Republics upon which it stands:
One nation, playing God, blind & visible, claiming liberty and justice for all.
If Dissent is the greatest form of Patriotism, then call me patriotic. The idea of Impeaching Bush & Cheney seems the most patriotic thing we could do. I carry a great deal of stress, dismay & disenchantment with our Government and this Country, that somehow under our watch, The United States has become synonymous with Torture, Secret Prisons, Illegal Occupations, Illegal Wiretaps, and a host of other serious high crimes. Why Impeachment proceedings went forward for the Bill Clinton sex scandal, and go nowhere for Bush & Cheney, is beyond me. One glaringly obvious obstacle is Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and her “Impeachment is Off the Table” stance.
Pelosi has obstructed justice at the highest level of Government, & I hope California Voters hand her the walking papers she so richly deserves. All of the Democratic majority members of Congress have essentially dropped the ball too. Complacent, and lacking in teeth or backbone. The Democratic majority was installed in both the House & Senate, by Voters in 2006, with a clear message we wanted the illegal occupation of Iraq to end. What we got was repeated approval of funds to keep the war/occupation going, and a $9.5 trillion dollar debt. Our government has brought this country to it’s knees, in job losses, bankrupt ecomony, mortgage failures, disappearing pensions, and a moral bankruptcy.
Add to that, gloomy & horrific news of the goings on in Gitmo with America’s gulog. No due process, no above board accountability with the International Red Cross, and legal entanglements that stumble and stall for years on end. These things are the worst this country has engaged in, and no amount of dissent has made any noticible effect. Having protested, written, vigiled, supported Civil (dis)obedience… none of it has worked.
So as we approach this 4th of July, where we celebrate the birthday of the U.S., it is with a sense of failure, and great disappointment. Under the Bush regime, where Corporations are considered as “people”, and the people as dirt, and a mere afterthought. Katrina hurricaine victims still left to fend for themselves, still in a shambles, years later.
The illegal occupation of Iraq takes all the money that should be used to support the needs of this nation, and it’s people. The focus being on interefering with the rest of the world and telling other countries how the U.S. wants them to be run. The level of corruption & straying from the Constitution has never been worse.
Just how out of control things are, only became more obvious in the chaos we call the primaries. Changing rules, shifting dates, different processes, double dipping, and the media circus, with debates watered down to elementary school level sensationalism. It was both an embarassment, and probably why so many people choose to not vote. Our “system” is broken, and most elected officials have seriously failed us. I’d call to wish you a happy 4th of July, but the illegal wiretaps suck the lifeblood out of the festivities of freedom. I can only hope that the people of this country do unite to stop the madness. Never has being an American been at such an all time low.
