McCain picks former Ms. Alaska as running mate.
August 29, 2008 by Dusty
The female first term governor of Alaska is being reported at McSame’s pick for Veep.
Sarah Palin is an interesting choice. She is young and inexperienced. She is 44 years old. Mother of five children, and a staunch conservative. Prolife and anti-gay marriage. A former Ms. Alaska as well….lol.
This pick comes out of the blue, the media is aghast…and so am I.
If McSame wins in November, but kicks the bucket whilst in office, this woman would be our President. She has no experience on a national level at all, never representing her state as a congress critter.
This is a gutsy pick for McCain and his minions….no doubt about it.

It is a very smart pick on the assumption that, like the Bush campaigns in 2000 and 2004, an ideological battle can be won by the conservatives with a just-barely majority. If this assumption is questionable, which I believe it is, this pick is tremendously dangerous. The underlying assumption of the media outlets that “a woman is a woman is a woman,” and therefore Clinton supporters will be wooed is erroneous and patronizing.
Alexs last blog post..A "gestalt shift"
It is incredibly patronizing.
The rank and file Republicans will not, in my estimation, go for this woman strictly because the only elected office she has held is a year and a half as governor of Alaska. BFD!
But I am not a republican, and I really have no idea what that group of wingnuts will accept. If the women that supported Hillary flock to McCain only because of this pick…what does that say about them?
hint: it ain’t pretty.
Wow! This choice screams to me “I’ve changed my mind & don’t want to be elected”.
I put up a post of more details about her on my blog this morning
http://ramblings-fran.blogspot.com/
Her claim to fame is 6 years as Mayor of Wasilla City, Alaska.
Population 5469
Households 1979
34% Under age 18
Median age 29.7
Average Income $48,226
Average Home price $137,700
Approx 2118 homes
Are you kidding?
The city of Wasilla’s average income is pocket change for McCain!
Also, she is the mother of 5– the youngest born in April of 2008, with Down’s Syndrome. 5 kids, including a special needs infant, not yet a year old?
Kids ages 18,17,13,7 & a 4 month old infant.
Republicans can take comfort in knowing:
• She has a lifetime membership in the Natl. Rifle Association
(Apparently, a love for guns is a republican VP requirement).
• She has resource exploitation experience:
On Aug. 1, Palin scored a major victory when the Alaska legislature passed a bill that authorizes her administration to award a license to TransCanada Alaska to build a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s North Slope to a hub in Canada.
The pipeline would be the largest construction project in the history of North America. If completed as hoped within ten years, it would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The United States imported about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in 2007.
• She is three years Obama’s junior, as well, and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama’s relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.
Meanwhile it’s McCain’s birthday today. (Hope there will be frie crews standing by for the cake with 72 candles!)
The Repubs are thinking of postponing the Convention, as a monter hurricane may hit the gulf coast while they speechify.
Apparently, Mother Nature is voting early!

I think McCain’s pick is extremely cynical, but in the same vein, she is a safe pick as she seems to espouse most of the Right’s main planks, including guns, oil, babies, and gay issues (isn’t that all there is to life? GAG).
Her lack of experience doesn’t bother me all that much, it’s the fact that a lot of her views are pretty much “anti-individual rights” that I have a problem with.

Indeed, it’s a safe pick because she is a strident social and economic conservative; a “populist” conservative at that. Therefore, the ideological Right, which drove Mr. Bush into office in 2000 and 2004, will accept this, I believe, as an “olive branch.” I believe they will come out for this election - and she has helped to secure that. However, that block is not going to be swollen by independents and moderate Democrats, again, as it was for Mr. Bush. So, the assumption underlying this pick is flawed.
As I said before, Clinton supporter, excepting of course those few nuts, will not support McCain simply because his V.P. is a woman. That argument, and the terrible assumption that it rests on, is ridiculous. And anybody who would go with that line of reasoning is clearly biased.
I too feel that most of the Clintonista’s will not in good conscience swing over to McCain because of this pick.
The PUMA folks however are a totally different block of voters..and how they view Palin will be interesting indeed.
Huge mistake for them! Great for us! The more I read about her the more this blows me away! Is he sabotaging himself? Throwing Obama to the dogs? Am I missing something here?
I do think this is going to backfire on McCain! I am sure there is more than just the Commissioner issue!
I hope Palin being so young and inexperienced next to a guy likely to keel any minute would turn off more voters than those gained because she is a woman! She does not have what it takes to be President no way!
I think she is ripe for the picking and even if it is only one debate Biden will eat her up. Bring on the debates!
Jims last blog post..Yesterday a lot happened on the Russian Front" Gee what makes me think Bush is behind China Benefiting and Russia getting Dissed?
I recently saw (today)a interview on C-span that was taped on 2-28-08 and when Sarah Palin was asked about her family there she replied that she had 4 children with no mention about her pregnancy or reference to a new addition.
If she is pro life then why would she not mention this when specifically asked. I wonder about this.
Brilliant pick, McCain! It will be Spiro Agnew all over again: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/29/123623/259
It will be Spiro Agnew all over again~ We can only hope Big Fella.
I heard her speech– good gawd! *I was a hockey mom, and member of the PTA” McCain blinked about 15 times after he introduced her as his choice, as if he was thinking, slowly processing in his brain…. I can’t believe I am saying this.
Her kids had to stand & hold the 4 month old infant while Mom spoke at the podium– get used to it kids! Mom will be too busy to care for the Down’s Syndrome special needs baby.
I am a feminist & a Mother of 2. I have worked a job and done the job of Mothering– but having raised 2 healthy kids, I can say having an infant– either mom or dad is a very demanding committment- for both parents. Sleepless nights, chicken pox, cutting teeth, dipaers, etc.
I could not imagine taking on such a daunting committment as VP- possibly even president, should McCain kick the bucket.
It seems really irresponsible, and unfair to a special needs baby.
We were discussing that, historically, there have not been infants in the Executive office circles– probably for a good reason. The job is too damned demanding.
McCain passed over so many experienced, qualified potentials, that I can’t help but think he really decided he does not want to be president.
His personal life & assetts have been scrutinized, and I think he realized it would only be more intense if he were elected. the guy can retire & make his biggest worry remembering which home to go home to.

Fran,
The baby will be raised by a nanny, who is kidding who? As a special needs child, he needs more attention and time… not less in my pov.
McCain can’t think for one minute that the majority of the Rethugs will go for her as second in command…he simply cant!!!!
But then..stranger things have happened within the Rethug party…we got Bush43 from them…twice! He didn’t have any more experience than she did..and he’s Pres!

You’ve got to see Bill Maher this week on Palin’s “What does a vice president do?” LOL!
If Palin was man, would anybody put up with the lack of credentials in the heartbeat-away department? What does this say about the people McCain would select for his cabinet? And there goes Roe vs Wade if the McCain/Palin ticket wins.
When the truth comes out and they find out she is just another mindless Dictatorial liar McCain will be done! You may have read this at Betmo’s but check out the link. Her 16 year old daughter is the mother and she is the grand mother. Read it, it’s undeniable!
