The First Step Can Be The Hardest

Looking back over the big news from the past week I was bored. Another big wig poliician got caught dipping his wick in someone besides his significant other and I just didn’t care. He is like King David from the Old Testament after all.

Big stars ded both from dreaded disease and sudden heart failure and the one I will miss the most was the least reported on. I didn’t learn my ABC’s or 1 2 3’s from her but…damn…I remember that poster on my wall when I was a teen.I still couldn’t bring myself to care.

A congressman’s wife, a politician herself, was convicted of conspiracy of bribery and it just seemed like business as usual in Detroit and elsewhere. I didn’t spend any time caring about that either.

What I have been thinking about is the immenent withdrawal of troops from Iraq’s major cities. It seems the deadline is Tuesday for them to move and the machine continues to plant doubt in Americans minds that Iraq is ready to be on their own. Hoping to keep our troops in harms way. therefore keeping the bucks rolling in, they are telling us the General is wrong. They say the Iraqi’s aren’t ready to deal with the violence by themselves. Maybe they are right. But I do care about this…a lot.

I care about the people whose country was invaded. Those who are being left to their civil war alone. The troops who dismantled the old government are leaving and maybe they will be able to get things done their own way. I am sure more will lose their lives in the vacum but independence from an oppressive occupier is sometimes better. Perhaps without the great satan’s influence they can find peace. On their own.

The occupiers will still be in their country but instead of a very visible presence in the cities they will be hanging out in the rural bases near the big oil pipeline. Not as likely to be attacked but present to protect America’s real interest in this war. Leaving many troops the oppurtunity to return home. Or not.

This actually frees up some more troops to occupy Afghanistan. You know, that forgotten war that is starting to re emerge in the news. The past few months we have started to hear more about the occupation there a bit more than we have since “Shock and Awe”. The reselling of that war to America is back on. And the people with the big purses full of death are somewhat appeased.  The war machine keeps being oiled and the politicians who support it still look good. On paper.

In this time of “victory” some will celebrate. A few may get sent home to the joy of those who they have been gone from. More will be redeployed to Afghanistan to finish their tours, whichever one this is for them. All will be affected by the time spent in the cities of Iraq. Those who are leaving are leaving a big part of themselves in the streets of Iraq. The part of themselves who fought for what they believe is Americas continued freedom. Good hearted men and women who make our nation what it is.

While I am somewhat celebrating them leaving Iraq’s cities my heart is heavy as well. Will our war machine take better care of them than those who sacrificed in the past?  Will the violence escalate in Afghanistan? Will any come home intact? Is there really any reason to celebrate?

There is still war and occupations for them to continue.

It’s not a signal to let the good times roll.

I see more and more as our le3aving the cities gets closer what I saw as a fact the day the idiot ignored all good advice against attacking Iraq and that is an all out was Sunni against Shiite then spreading throughout the middle east.

One of my sons that has been to both Iraq and Afghanistan more than a few times leading EOD teams. He has been trying to prepare my 20 year old who will be going to Afghanistan in December to do the same thing.

They are the nuts who drive in the huge tractor like vehicles to hopefully find and disarm IED’s. He said if you touch the vehicle when it hits a 500 pound stack at the very leasty what ever is touching the vehicle will be broken. It is only going to get worse I wish it would end and quick!
