If You Get Confused…Tell Me Why You Treat Me So Unkind
July 22, 2009 by Alien Trucker

Jerry’s last Grateful Dead show was filled with heartache. On July 9, 1995, Chicago’s Soldier Field was a chaotic mess with gate crashers and violence. Cops and freaks not mixing well and a mini riot inside where even plywood pieces were being thrown into the crowd.
Jerry and the boys were saddened. Insiders say they were ready to quit touring because the crowd had changed so much over the last few years. That’s part of why I stopped touring as well. The thousands of parking lot freaks who went without any intention of trying to get a “Miracle” ticket made the scene a bar room and those scenes are always tinged with fear and violence.
Second set opened with a “Shakedown Street” into a sweet short “Sampson and Delilah” that segued…not so well…into this “So Many Roads”. Jerry sometimes faltered during this show but so did Bobby and Phil. The crowd was so rowdy their attention was interrupted often. The YouTube poster for this video had to cut it into two parts but it is strong video and audio so it is well worth posting here. Jerry’s sorrow is evident in this moving rendition.
Jerry’s death a month later saddened the whole Deadhead community world wide. My friend, Deadhead Rob, still believes the heart attack was caused by a broken heart. I think he has something there.
