I think you're right about his being Irish having an affect on his popularity--among the Irish! I think those San Patiricios were operating out of El Paso (my 2nd home). Our cathedral here is St. Patricks. One additional reason for Kennedy's popularity ( and I might add it seems like every house in East LA had a pic of him when I was growing up) might be his being Irish. There was an all-Irish battalion that defected to the Mexican side during the Mexican-American war, the San Patricios (St Patricks Day battalion). They are honored in ceremonies every year to this day. I wasn’t aware of that, interesting story.
