VA Concealing Number of Suicide Attempts

To say that I am furious would be an understatement. It appears as if the Veterans Administration has covered up the attempted suicides of approximately 12,000 veterans every year/ The cause of these suicide attempts was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and as it turns out it wasn’t because of a lack of resources, it was because the VA, in its reluctance to get involved with the expenses associated with an expensive disorder like PTSD decided not to cover those expenses.

According to a recent Rand study approximately 1.7 million soldiers have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of that number approximately 320,000 have returned with various brain injuries, depression, and psychological disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Until recently the Veterans Administration has claimed that only 1,000 veterans have attempted suicide, but now, two Democratic Senators have called for the resignation of the top VA mental health official. Senator Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Patty Murray of Murray of Washington State have called for the resignations of Ira Katz, the mental health director of the Veterans Administration and other top VA officials.

Information pertaining to the cover up and the actual number of suicide attempts came to light during a national trial in San Francisco when emails by Katz and other officials were disclosed. The trial is a direct result of two veterans groups, Veterans United For Truth and Veterans for Common sense. During the course of the trial, which does not seek monetary damage but rather oversight to guarantee the safety of our Veterans, the emails revealed some of the following attitudes on the part of Katz and his associates.

“Is this something we should (carefully) address ourselves in some sort of release before someone stumbles on it?” Katz inquired. Another email stated that on the average 18 veterans kill themselves every day and that of that number, 18 per day are successful while, five are under VA supervision at the time. The results are even more tragic when you consider the possibility that only fifty percent of those veterans with depression or PTSD have sought treatment–a fact which may have something to do with the fact that governmental agencies drag their feet when it comes to providing services for those veterans who suffer from psychological disorders, preferring to approve claims for those with physical disorders. Why if you didn’t know better you’d think that the government was dragging its feet where psychological issues are concerned because it believes it can get away with it.

i don’t know what to say

what do you say when you realize where millions of your tax dollars go? i understand fully why the shrouds of secrecy from the government- i would want to keep the abuses, theft, murder and chaos a secret too. i believe that the american government orchestrated and carried out 9/11 in order to gain unprecedented power-and unprecedented access to money, military, and resources- from around the world. i am not a conspiracy theorist- i have been researching this government for years- and putting the puzzle pieces together. if you still can’t wrap your mind around the fact that these people are not only capable– but willing- to do whatever it takes to see their plan through- it’s ok. they’ll probably leave you alone and take me.

Another book from a former Bush employee..

Dougie Feith wrote one. George Tenet wrote his and Rummy did a big ole interview about his time in the Bush Administration with a mens magazine. Now, Ricardo Sanchez, the commander of U.S. Forces in Iraq in 2003-2004 has written a book about his part in history. Sanchez’s book, Wiser in Battle: A Soldier’s Story, isn’t a fond walk down memory lane, not by a long shot. Some may say his book is sour grapes. From a RawStory writeup:

Sanchez commanded the US military in Iraq from 2003-2004. The three-star general was relieved of his commander in 2004 following the Abu Ghraib scandal, and in 2005, was told his career was over and he wouldn’t be promoted to a fourth star.

Time has printed a three page excerpt. Was Sanchez a scapegoat for Rummy, and the horrors of Abu-Ghraib among other things? Read the excerpt and make up your own mind. From the Time excerpt:

Iraq is Fine Dear

IRAQ IS FINE DEAR
Based on “I Want to Tell You”
By George Harrison
New lyrics by Jeffrey and Brian

Iraq is fine, dear
Fanatics there say “God, I’m free!”
I don’t mind
In due time they’ll come to worship me!

Iraq is fine dear
Saddam is gone but chaos reigns
That’s okay
Profit first could make us look insane

But if my action seems absurd
It’s only me I break my word
I’ll be confusing you

Iraq is fine, dear
Civilians die, but that’s all right
No big deal
We’ll be there forever might males right

Sometimes you think I came from hell
But if I tell the truth I’ll scare you
You’ll never comprehend

I’ll be a god now!
To disobey means you will die!
No more grief
Death en mass will never make me cry

Make me cry
I won’t cry
Make me cry
I won’t cry

WHAT WOULD JESUS THINK?
based on “And Your Bird Can Sing”
By John Lennon and Paul McCartney
New Lyrics by Brian

You tell me that you’re Christian, but I wonder
What would Jesus think?
No you don’t fool me, you don’t fool me

You tell me that you pray and you’re close to God
What would Jesus think?
No you don’t fool me, you don’t fool me

When your word is broken and you lose your crown
You will pray for mercy. Is it found? Is it found?

When you need to murder and you seem unsound
Take a look for Jesus. He’s around. He’s around

START A WAR
Based on “Drive My Car”
by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
New Lyrics by Jeffrey

Exxon told him here’s what you can do
They said the fool is you
You better start jumpin’ yah son of a bitch
You can do something to make us rich

CHORUS
Sucker, you can start a war
Yes, we’re gonna ask for more
Sucker you can start a war
And maybe we’ll screw you!

Told the soldiers that our prospects were good
They said “Georgie, we’ll do what we should
Killing for Rummy is all good and fine
But we sure wish that you’d tell us why.”

CHORUS

CHORUS

He told the boys they would never be foiled
And they said “let’s do it if won’t be for oil.”
He got his war but he hasn’t a heart
Petroleum profits and that was smart

He’s a bloody warfare man
Scheming ins his warfare land
Planning all his warfare plans for you and me

He’s as mad as he can be
Twisting up reality
Warfare man are you feeling at all?

Warfare man, you’re dissin’
Warfare man, quit pissin’
The world, it was never at your command

He’s a raving psychopath
Led us down a twisted path
Isn’t he what we don’t want to be

Warfare man, we’re worried
‘Cause your mind seems blurry
Leave it it all ’til someone sane relieves your command

Has a crazy point of view
Murders but he’s never through
Isn’t he what we don’t want to be?

Warfare man won’t listen
We all know what he’s missing
The world, it was never at his command

He’s a real warfare man
Scheming in his warfare land

While We Get Dumber, They Get Stronger

Let us review again, for the sake of this discussion, Chimpy’s track record.-Failed to even try to stop a devastating attack on the United States.

-Took a basically contained problem in Saddam’s Iraq, and turned it into a cauldron that kills a few Americans every day. Chimpy’s record of killing Americans now surpasses Osama’s.

-Took a friendly population in the peoples of Afghanistan, and turned them into either indifferent or outright hostile through a combination of lies and neglect.

-Took a budget surplus and turned it into the worst indebtedness the Federal Government has ever had. Via this route, caused a sharp drop in the value of a dollar and a resultant explosion of inflation in the US, amounting to a huge de facto tax on everything from energy (prices up 300%) to eggs.

-Turned the image of the US worldwide into that of an incompetent, bloodithirsty torturer.

Not co-incidentally, Chimpy can point to the legitimizing of violent radicals as a sort of crowning foreign policy achievement. As we see in this study, people tired of suffering through Chimpy’s murderous stupidity are turning in ever-larger numbers to the very radicals Chimpy claims he’s trying to defeat. It isn’t hard to understand why this is happening either; the more you are beaten on, the better ANY alternative to another beating begins to look.

i surrender

white flag yep- put a fork in me- i am done. i am giving in and just living and let live. i can’t fight it anymore- the elitist in me has decided that i will acquiesce to the 1/3 of the american people who really think that another clinton in the white house will be what this country needs after 8 years of neo cons; to the 1/3 of the american public who will vote for mccain for reasons i just can’t wrap my mind around. minorities in this country are not well received- apparently, not even by each other as evidenced by the nasty campaign that hillary clinton has waged against barack obama. the people who are clinton supporters think bowling and lapel pins are the merit of how well a president can do their job. they just want to feel good about themselves that they aren’t voting mccain. i posted an editorial from philly highlighting why clinton should just go somewhere. unfortunately for me, that would be back here to new york. sigh. i think i would rather be elitist because at least i have critical thinking skills. no, the 2/3 who will vote for mccain and clinton can’t really see the bigger picture because they don’t really want change. they want to go back iin time to when they could consume and live without having to face the reality of global climate change; starving people around the world; and the fact that we are no longer a democratic republic.

i mean seriously, am i the only one who sees? the fact that the top neo cons in the bush regime have taken up positions in our institutions of higher learning and media outlets? john yoo at berkeley; karl rove at fox; bill kristol at nyt, and most recently- tony snow at cnn. let’s not forget murdoch and zell named to board of directors at associated press. so, the head neo cons are controlling mass media and have put laws in place that permanently circumvent civil liberties in the name of protecting against possibly, maybe, perhaps, someday another terrorist attack- and no says a thing. propaganda machine anyone? but no- the sheeple are busy throwing barbs at each other within the democratic party while watching our country and our planet burn.

and i feel like a stranger in my own country.

When The Violence Is Brought To The Children: It Has Gone Too Far

Photo: Joao Silva/NYTimes

As reported in a story by Michael R. Gordon in the New York Times with the headline “Civilians Suffer in Sadr City’s Daily Gun Battles”

BAGHDAD — Ayman, bleeding profusely from his arm, was rushed to Company B’s stronghold in Sadr City late Sunday afternoon.

A bullet had carved a bloody groove near his left elbow as he was going to fetch some bread from a market.

Seven children had been struck by a burst of gunfire from militia fighters who have been roaming through the streets near the American positions, his distraught father said.

But Ayman, 11, was one of the lucky ones. Four of the children, his father said, were dead.

With no functioning police force and the streets a battle zone, it could not be determined if the children had been caught in cross-fire or had been deliberately shot at by militia fighters, as Ayman’s father suggested.

Take a long look at this child’s face, it could be the face of any child, of any of our own children.

While it is admirable, and no less than humanitarian of U.S. forces to administer to this civilian child’s wound, it would not ever have been necessary, had the the Bushliburton administration not invaded Iraq in the first place, or withdrawn our forces years ago.

When will the United States stand down, bring our people home, and no longer be a reason for the suffering in Iraq and at home?

Ayman’s blood, as is the blood of countless others is on our hands, our leaders, our government, our people should all be ashamed of ourselves.

When will all honest, moral Americans decide that enough is enough and we begin the process of reacquiring our moral authority?

JOHNNY MACKENZUE

Based on “Eleanor Rigby”
by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
New Lyrics by Kyle

God pity all the broken people
God pity all the mourning people
Johnnie MacKenzie signs up for war in a school
Where recruiters have been
Buying a dream
Goes off for training learning to kill
From madmen who love blood, death, and gore
What is it for?
All the broken people, where do they all come from?
All the mourning people, how do they all go on?
Mother MacKenzie watching a program sees
Photos no mother should see.
How can it be?
Watching him dying, bleeding from wounds
In his heart while the camera stares
Leaders don’t care
All the broken people, where do they all come from
All the mourning people, how do they all go on?
God pity all the broken people
God pity all the mourning people
Johnny MacKenzie was killed in Iraq and was
Hidden along with his flag
Meaningless rag
Mary MacKenzie, wiping the tears from her eyes
When she prays at the grave
Who has been saved?
All the broken people, where do they all come from
All the mourning people, how do they all go on?

is it just me?

dem donkey

i continuously get calls for donations from the democratic party in the mail. usually, i just write on the envelope ‘no impeachment=no money’ but i decided to contact someone at headquarters via email. i mean seriously. who in their right mind would donate to the party of pelosi who won’t hold any member of bushco accountable for anything? or reid who won’t cut off funding for the illegal war in iraq? or who woud donate money to fund hillary clinton’s campaign based on innuendo, put downs, and outright lies? not me. i am going to change my affiliation soon (on the downlow i expect to be moving in a few weeks) and i will change it to independent. here is my email to dnc:

“i felt compelled to contact directly after receiving several pleas for donations. i won’t be contributing to the democratic party because i feel that the democratic party has let it’s members down. from the shameful sidestepping on issues like ending funding for the iraq war; to the outright refusal to hold any member of the bush regime accountable for anything; to the shameful display that hillary clinton has put on almost her entire campaign- i am ashamed to be a democrat. as a matter of fact, i am changing my affiliation to independent before the election. the democratic party was given a mandate by the people of this country and it has squandered it by pandering and playing the waiting game for the 2008 elections. i realize that my email means exactly nothing- but i felt that i should let you know.”

Judge Not Mediator Needed To Handle Iraq Rape Cases

Must Read: U.S. Women Working in Iraq Continue to be Sexually Assaulted While Their Rapists Go Free

As the number of women coming forward rises, Congress has begun to question why these crimes are not being prosecuted. In fact, there are several laws on the books that would allow these cases to proceed: the problem is not a lack of legal tools but a lack of will. “There is no rational explanation for this,” says Scott Horton, a lecturer at Columbia Law School who specializes in the law of armed conflict. Prosecutorial jurisdiction for crimes like the alleged rapes of Jones and Leamon is easily established under the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act and the Patriot Act’s special maritime and territorial jurisdiction provisions. But somebody has to want to prosecute the cases. (AlterNet)

There is a lot to be disgusted with about the war in Iraq. We can be disgusted with the way that the US military seems to have a callous disregard for the lives of the citizens they are supposed to be bringing democracy to. We can be disgusted at the way our troops are being treated once they are wounded (mentally and/or physically). We can even be disgusted at how the Bush administration keeps treating our fighting men and women, as yo-yo’s; stringing them along with the idea that things will get better, only to draw back, yank them around and spin them out again, as if it’s all for fun and games in a very active war zone.

Iraq Moratorium Day #8; April 18

Following is from iraqmoratorium.org:

The Iraq Moratorium, a nationwide grassroots movement uniting individuals and groups against the Iraq war, will be observed on Friday, April 18.

Since September, the Iraq Moratorium has asked people and groups opposed to the war and occupation to take some action on the third Friday of every month to end the war.

Individual actions can range from wearing a black armband or a button to school or work to writing letters, putting up signs, calling members of Congress, and a wide variety of other actions. The group’s website, www.IraqMoratorium.org offers ideas, and lists planned group actions across the country.

Since it began eight months ago, the Iraq Moratorium has sparked more than 800 group events – vigils, rallies, marches, speakers, films, and other actions – listed on the group’s website, with reports, photos and videos.

The Iraq Moratorium encourage local organizers to “do their own thing” on the third Friday of the month – but to do something, whatever it is, to end the war. It is all a loosely-knit national grassroots effort operating under the Iraq Moratorium umbrella.

“Two-thirds of the people in the United States want this war to end,” said Eric See, a Moratorium organizer in California. “Our goal is to get that Silent Majority to speak out, in whatever way they choose, as a way to inspire others to action and build a movement that will end this senseless bloodshed.”

“Doing something on Friday, even something small, is a first step toward ending the war,” See said. “It all makes a difference, and our individual actions are magnified when we all act on the same day. The Moratorium asks that people interrupt business as usual and do something to end the war.”
