Dizzy’s Ten Post Round-Up

Image created at GlassGiant.comI’m on fire, right now, as I have a lot on my mind. I’m sure many of you are getting worked up about the same things that are sticking in my craw. Yet, when I try to express myself in a coherent fashion, it comes out on the page looking something like “akjf;laghoehtoieWTFgj;akjoijfoidjAHHHH!” Of course, I “know” what it says, but it’s impossible to translate.

I have plenty of time to think of these things, as I go about my daily tasks. I think “oh, how witty that will sound” and then I sit down to write and…I got nothin’!

Maybe I worry too much about censoring myself once I set down to my computer, trying not to offend anyone or at least, not offend them too much, especially with everyone on even higher alert and pointing to offenses more than usual during the current primary/caucus race. I think that I am coming to a point where I say fu…–I mean, “bleep” that (*wink*), I would rather lose friends than not be able to speak my mind. Of course, I will always be respectful when I am in a space (where you may be reading this) that does not belong to me, but I’m thinking it’s time for me to cut to the chase and actually say whatever the he…–I mean, “bleep” is on my mind.

That being said, there is some shi…–I mean, there are some things in today’s round-up that will definitely make you go “wtf?” So, why don’t we start off with a little soft shoe to ease you into it: Gregory Hines & Steve Martin Tap.

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and moreMy apologies. My brain appears to be suffering a 404 page error, today. Maybe it’s the lack of caffeine. Maybe I’m suffering from “John McCain Syndrome”. Not good for a lass of my age.

Of course, it could just be that I am still recovering from my usual work-weekend. During the rest of the week, I wake early and bed down early. But, since I work bar hours, and still find myself getting up early to IM with my darling husband in Iraq, my aging body can’t cope with the bedtime disparities (early to rise, late to bed). It’s hard on this morning person. I feel bad for sleeping in when there is so much blogging and housework to be done.

Dizzy’s Ten Post Round-Up

Image created at GlassGiant.comWith my kids getting a little older and not needing 100% constant supervision (including the fact, as we are doing lessons, they can follow me around the house for instruction when I give them homework) and with the limited time I chat with my husband, online, I am finally getting a groove where I find that I can actually accomplish many things of substance and in a short amount of time. I haven’t had that since before the little ones were still in diapers (which is about the same time that I also started my business). So, now, I am actually experiencing boredom. What a relief!

So what do I decide to do on a workday, when I could be resting up for the long night ahead?

Chocolate? Yes, of course.

But, not only that, I decided to post a round-up. I must like you guys, a lot. Besides, according to my site stats, I have one loyal reader, so I don’t want to disappoint him/her.

It’s snowing outside, so it’s possible that I may not even go to work if it get’s nasty. The weather outside and all the dramz in the nooz is putting me in a miserable funk, so I figured I’d offer up something upbeat and funky for your musical intervention, today (btw: Dizzy abso-friggin-lutely LOVES this song): Ce Ce Peniston - Keep On Walkin

The Lives of Others & Snowcake

The Lives of Others

This one won an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2006, with a highly nuanced and intelligent script this political yet very human film grabs you and does not let go. I cannot say enough about these actors, not a bad one in the bunch .Yet Ulrich Muhe, who plays the STASI Captain Gerd Wiesler is to be singled out. An actor, who can allow you to enter his mind with just his facial expression, is a great actor.

The plot line has you following the captain as he does what he does best, listen to others, and find enemies of the state. You slowly watch this finely tuned machine of a man, who begins to feel and become demoralized, warp into a good man. The GDR and the STASI has full power over the lives of others and his own Wielser finds out. There are twists and turns here, like any good political thriller, which one does not expect. The ending will lift your heart.

In an interesting real life twist one learns that only some 10% of west Germans have gone to the archives to see who their informants were during this period. We learn that Ulrich Muhe did exactly that only to find his wife and the mother of his child was one of his informants~ perhaps that is why he excels in this role. To understand the motivation of ones family to inform, one would have to understand those they reported to. Clearly Mr. Muhe understood. I highly recommend this film.

Dizzy’s Ten Post Round-Up

Just so you know, I am very grateful for being able to write this round-up, after having gotten myself stuck in my basement (longish story)!

After screaming and wailing for about fifteen minutes, my “MacGyver” instincts kicked in and I was able to create a contraption to extricate myself before I was overcome by cobwebs and hairballs.

As soon as I freed myself, I swore by the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I would get this round-up to you, if it was the last thing I did.

After washing my hair, painting my toenails, redecorating my living room and consulting a fortune cookie for my weekly lottery numbers, I was finally able to sit down and write this round-up.  Since I’ll be bedding down, after this, I guess you could say this is the last thing I am doing.

I’m in a jazzy, bluesy, kind of mood, so I’ll let “Lady Day” sing some blues for you: Billie Holiday “One for my Baby (and one more for the road)”

Image created at GlassGiant.comToday, was a miserable day. Sure, it was a beautiful sunny day. But, noticing that we have passed a casualty milestone in Iraq and hearing how cold-hearted the Vice-President was, in response to that milestone, broke my heart. Every day, I hope that my soldier will not become part of that milestone, yet, the current White House administration acts like, “it’s business, as usual”; not a big deal.

So, it’s only fitting that I re-post the following video, because it is a big deal that this president does not care that he is tearing this country apart: Dear Mr President - Pink

We got snow for Easter, in my neck of the woods. As the snow began to melt, today, I could see the first signs of Spring, sprouting up out of the brown ground; the first sprigs of green grass. I think we are going to need another decent snowstorm, to saturate the ground, to boost the colors of Spring; something I am looking forward to, along with the 60-plus degree temperatures.

Body of War

Filed under Iraq War, politics, video

Friday night’s Bill Moyers Journal was an emotional roller coaster for me. The entire show was devoted to a documentary made by Phil Donohue and Ellen Spiro called Body of War. The subject of the documentary is Tomas Young, a soldier that was shot and paralyzed from the nipples down less than a week after he landed in Iraq. It is a moving haunting tale of how he came back to life when he became an anti-war activist. The irony of the documentary is that Tomas’ brother and step-father are still supporters of the war, while Tomas and his mother are not. But they still love and support each other. It took three years for this documentary to be completed. Ms. Spiro literally became part of the family, filming during all hours of the day and night to show what Tomas and his family deal with to bring him back from the hell created by George Bush’s war in Iraq.

The documentary is slowly being released nationwide now. I am still emotionally affected by Tomas’ story so this post won’t go into much detail. I urge you to watch Bill Moyers Journal this weekend, you can find the broadcast time in your area here. The music was done by Eddie Vedder.

Dizzy’s Ten Post Round-Up

Yesterday, marking the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, was far from a somber day, for me. I have to somewhat disconnect from my feelings about the war because I live with it, on too many levels.

As a military spouse, of course, I live with the Iraq war on daily basis, as I tend the home-fires and keep them burning. As the only regular professional entertainment for the troops, where my husband is stationed, I get to meet soldiers on their way to and/or from the war(s).

I have seen a few of them with parts of their skulls or other body parts, blown off. I have met many more at their mentally and emotionally lowest point in their life. Many of them tell me that my show is a form or therapy for them. It’s a form of therapy for their wives, too.

Honestly, it’s a form of therapy for me, too. If I was not serving the troops entertainment, I would be sitting at home worrying for my own soldier. I feel like I am giving something back and it makes me feel less lonely knowing that I am doing something good for others, rather than wallowing in my own misery.

I try to make a point to sing fun, upbeat and positive music. The following piece of mood music is one of the most popular songs I sing and I love how it brings a smile to even the grumpiest soldier’s face: Swing Out Sister - Breakout

You will likely scratch your head or gouge your eyes out after you read today’s Ten Post Round-Up:
