For what purpose, I do not know exactly.If Busharraf had Bhutto knocked off, he’ll make sure that Scotland Yard doesn’t get the cooperation it would need to figure that out. If Busharraf didn’t knock Bhutto off, how is it Scotland Yard will accomplish what all of our military might can’t, and run down the radicals responsible?

I’m really not sure what this gesture is supposed to do, EXCEPT whitewash Busharraf. And being the tin hatter that I am, this, by itself, makes Busharraf look suspect.

In all likelihood, we’ll never know for sure. There were a lot of people who wanted Benazir dead for their own purposes. From the 12th century Caliphate-types to the modern strongmen (and wannabe strongmen,) Bhutto presented a problem that was inevitably going to be solved in this fashion. Throughout the history of Pakistan, this seems to be the preferred method of dealing with those who make it to the top of the political apparatus. One can be sure that Busharraf, himself, also has a date with destiny, and it’ll probably be sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, the Taliban continues its march across the country, ever-closer to the prized nukes…
