This is by no means a slam dunk for ‘good guys’. Zardari was a consumate liar and corrupt as hell when Bhutto was in office. From MSNBC:
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The widower of slain former leader Benazir Bhutto will succeed Pervez Musharraf as president of Pakistan after winning a landslide election victory Saturday.
Unofficial results announced after separate votes in the federal and provincial assemblies showed Asif Ali Zardari winning an overwhelming majority.
Pro-Zardari lawmakers, some in tears, shouted “Long live Bhutto!” as the figures came in. The couple’s two jubilant but tearful daughters, one carrying a portrait of their late mother, smiled and hugged friends in the gallery of the National Assembly.

For what purpose, I do not know exactly.
If Busharraf had Bhutto knocked off, he’ll make sure that Scotland Yard doesn’t get the cooperation it would need to figure that out. If Busharraf didn’t knock Bhutto off, how is it Scotland Yard will accomplish what all of our military might can’t, and run down the radicals responsible?
I’m really not sure what this gesture is supposed to do, EXCEPT whitewash Busharraf. And being the tin hatter that I am, this, by itself, makes Busharraf look suspect.
In all likelihood, we’ll never know for sure. There were a lot of people who wanted Benazir dead for their own purposes. From the 12th century Caliphate-types to the modern strongmen (and wannabe strongmen,) Bhutto presented a problem that was inevitably going to be solved in this fashion. Throughout the history of Pakistan, this seems to be the preferred method of dealing with those who make it to the top of the political apparatus. One can be sure that Busharraf, himself, also has a date with destiny, and it’ll probably be sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, the Taliban continues its march across the country, ever-closer to the prized nukes…
